Commercial Availability of News Gateway
By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

EchoStar Satellite Services, a subsidiary of EchoStar Corp., announced that they have released the News Gateway (News - Alert), a TV news delivery service. Using the EchoStar's nationwide fiber network combined with IP multicasting technologies, the service delivers live HQ video from any one of 210 U.S. designated market areas (DMA).

News room directors, engineers and reporters will now have the ability to select, decode and route simultaneous live video content in real time from cities across the country through an easy-to-use online interface. The selected video is then delivered to client locations through a dedicated fiber connection into EchoStar's Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network managed by 24/7 network engineering staff.

The number of simultaneously viewable sources has been encoded in high quality MPEG formats, including standard definition from 210 DMAs and high definition from 170 markets and is also been scaled to meet customer needs.

EchoStar currently maintains and operates 10 satellite gateways that are state-of-the-art digital broadcast facilities providing continuous growth and enhancement to programming choices for millions of customers for DISH Network, Dish Mexico, ViP-TV, WildBlue and other communications providers. EchoStar's gateways are also used as content gathering and distribution points for domestic and international programming and business television networks.

Chief Operating Officer for EchoStar Satellite (News - Alert) Services, Ken Carroll, said in a press release that EchoStar pioneered the efforts with major U.S. telco providers to implement a nationwide, fault-tolerant MPLS fiber network capable of transporting real-time, broadcast quality content. With News Gateway, they have brought this proven expertise to the broadcast community and have delivered important television news of natural disasters or historical events to a nationwide audience, live and instantaneous.
EchoStar offers clients with ability to access the same content from up to 210 DMAs with minimal duplication of infrastructure through the video over IP multicasting technologies.

EchoStar's world class 24/7 regional uplink facilities actively monitor and manage every point in the data path to ensure uninterrupted delivery to client sites. Additionally, the small footprint of the client-side hardware ensures ease of integration into existing video routing infrastructure.
