BBB warns about Satellite TV services

By: John Matarese
Millions of people have signed up for DirecTV or Dish Network in recent years for their TV service. Their ads are compelling: offering more channels for less money than the local cable company. DirecTV was most recently offering 150 channels for $29 a month: it's hard to say no to a deal like that.

But the Better Business Bureau is warning that it gets more complaints about Satellite TV services than almost any other business. It has more than 50,000 (yes, 50 thousand) complaints on file regarding DirecTV and Dish Network.

Most of the complaints concern customers claiming they did not get the advertised deal. The reality, the BBB says, is that many of these offers are for a limited time, or require a certain level of service, and people don't fully understand what they are signing up for.

DirecTV and Dish say the complaints are not out of line, given the millions of customers they have, and say none of their advertising is deceptive or fraudulent.

Bottom line: read any offer carefully, and when you call find out if it is just a "teaser" rate that expires in a short time.

And don't waste your money.
