EchoStar Uses Widevine For Slingbox Content Security 'SlingLoaded' Set-Top Boxes Embed Widevine's DRM By Todd Spangler - Multichannel News - August 10, 2010 EchoStar Technologies and Sling Media have selected Widevine Technologies' digital rights management solution to protect content delivered by "SlingLoaded" set-top boxes. EchoStar's SlingLoaded set-top boxes let users watch and control linear TV and DVR recordings over the Internet via a PC or select smartphones. Separately, Dish Network has selected Widevine to provide DRM as well as adaptive-rate streaming and DVD-like "trick play" features for the pay-TV provider's forthcoming "TV Everywhere" authentication service. Other Widevine customers include Netflix, Blockbuster and Sonic's Roxio CinemaNow. Investors in Seattle-based Widevine include Cisco Systems, Charter Ventures, Liberty Global and Samsung. EchoStar and Widevine plan to demo the Sling-enabled solutions at CableLabs' Summer Conference 2010 in Keystone, Colo., Aug. 15-18. "Our innovative consumer devices embedded with Widevine's widely adopted security bring peace of mind to content owners and service providers seeking to maintain their revenue model while providing consumers unparalleled flexibility to watch their content on the go," EchoStar Technologies president Mark Jackson said in a statement. |
