OTTAWA - Close to one million Canadian households are unprepared for the transition from analog to digital television, the country's broadcast regulator said Friday.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) estimates there are up to 857,000 Canadian households in large markets using rabbit-ear antennas to pick up over-the-air signals on the tube and another 31,500 households in smaller markets who will need to adjust for a massive technological switch at the end of August in 2011.
Canadians who subscribe to cable or satellite television won’t be affected by the change.
But those who do not may need to purchase a digital converter box for each television set in their homes in order to continue watching local TV.
The CRTC said the boxes will cost up to $75.
In smaller markets, some local stations may not switch to digital and consumers will have to purchase $300 satellite dishes to capture a signal, the CRTC said.
The broadcast regulator plans to change some regulations to allow cable and satellite distributors to provide free local TV for those affected.
The CRTC said it hopes the broadcasting industry will create and implement “a national consumer education program” to ensure all Canadians are informed of the coming changes.
