IE 9 beta: 2 million-plus downloads in first two days Internet Explorer 9 beta was downloaded by more than 2 million people worldwide in the first two days it was available, Microsoft says. "The initial reaction has been pretty overwhelming," wrote Roger Capriotti of Microsoft on the company's IE blog. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.) Capriotti noted that in comparison, when the beta, or test, version of IE 8 launched in August 2008, "we had 1.3 million downloads over the first five days." Microsoft made IE 9 beta available for download Sept. 15. The modernized, streamlined and minimalist Web browser — in some ways similar to Google's Chrome browser — may bring back the "browser wars." But it also may result in frustration for a good number of Windows XP users, who cannot take advantage of IE 9. It only works with Windows 7 and Windows Vista. According to NetMarketShare, Windows operating systems, in all its flavors, totaled 91.3 percent of the OS market worldwide, and Windows XP specifically accounts for almost 61 percent of that, while Windows 7, introduced in September 2009, has a nearly 16 percent share, and the much-disliked Windows Vista, 14 percent. |
